About Ahmedabad to Gandhinagar

Ahmedabad to Gandhinagar is more like a city hop than a long road trip, but it is still a very common route for office commutes, weekend outings, college visits and quick family drives.

Because the distance is short, going by car feels quite convenient. You avoid changing buses, auto rickshaws and waiting at stations. Just start from your home in Ahmedabad, take the highway, and you are in Gandhinagar in under an hour in normal traffic.

If you are using a self drive car, this is one of the easier routes to get comfortable with highway-style driving.

Route and Distance

Most people simply take the straight route via SG Highway and then towards Gandhinagar, or the Ahmedabad – Gandhinagar Highway. Both are well used and have plenty of turns, signboards and landmarks along the way.

  • Distance from Ahmedabad: Around 25 to 30 km, depending on your starting and ending points
  • Travel Time: Roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour in normal traffic

In peak office hours, it can take a bit longer, especially around junctions and main intersections.

Places to Visit in Gandhinagar

Even though Gandhinagar is the state capital and known for government offices, it actually has some nice spots for a short outing:

  • Akshardham Temple (Gandhinagar)
A big attraction for families. The temple, gardens and exhibitions can easily take a few hours.
  • Indroda Nature Park
Often called a kind of “Jurassic park” of India. It has dinosaur models, a zoo area and lots of green space. Good for kids.
  • Sarita Udyan and Riverfront Area
A peaceful garden and riverfront zone where you can just walk and relax.
  • Dandi Kutir Museum
A modern museum based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, built in a unique salt mound shape.
  • Mahatma Mandir and Capitol Complex
The new conventions and government buildings give a very planned-city feel.

For many people from Ahmedabad, this turns into a half-day or full-day trip with one or two main spots and a meal in between.

Travel Tips

  • Avoid peak office hours if you can, especially morning and evening rush.
  • If you are visiting Akshardham, check their entry timings and rules before you go.
  • Weekends and holidays can be slightly crowded at major attractions, but still manageable.
  • This is a very beginner friendly drive, so it works well if you are new to self drive rentals.
