Ahmedabad to Goa is a proper road trip, not just a quick highway run. It is long, but if you enjoy driving and want that classic “start in the city, end at the beach” feel, this route can be a lot of fun when planned right.
Most people do not drive it in a single stretch. They break the journey into two days, with a halt somewhere like Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Kolhapur or Belgaum, depending on the route and where they find a good hotel.
If you are taking a self drive car from Ahmedabad, this is the kind of trip where planning your breaks, fuel stops and driving shifts (if there are two drivers) makes a big difference in how tiring it feels.
Route and Distance
There are a few variations, but broadly you are heading south along the western side of India, then cutting into the Konkan and Goa region. A common option is:
Ahmedabad – Vadodara – Surat – Vapi side – into Maharashtra (Thane/Mumbai belt) – Pune or Kolhapur side – Belgaum – Goa
Closer to Goa you start getting into the Western Ghats, with some ghat sections and curves, but also very pretty views.
- Distance from Ahmedabad: Roughly 1,050 to 1,150 km by road, depending on your exact start point in Ahmedabad, your route and whether you are going to North Goa or South Goa
- Travel Time: Around 18 to 22 hours of driving in total, usually split across 2 days
If you are not used to long drives, it is much better to make it a 2 day trip and enjoy the road instead of forcing it into one continuous run.
Places to Visit in Goa
Once you reach Goa, the vibe completely changes. What you do there depends a lot on whether you pick North or South Goa, but some common ideas:
- Beaches
Baga, Calangute, Candolim and Anjuna in the north, or quieter ones like Palolem, Agonda and Varca in the south.
- Forts and Views
Aguada Fort, Chapora Fort and a few smaller viewpoints for sunset and sea views.
- Old Goa
Churches like Basilica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral and the old Portuguese-style streets.
- Food and Cafes
Beach shacks, local Goan thalis, seafood, bakeries and plenty of casual cafes.
- Water Activities
Depending on season and area, you will find options like boat rides, parasailing or dolphin tours.
If you are driving all the way from Ahmedabad, it makes sense to stay at least 4 to 5 days in Goa so the long journey feels worth it.
Travel Tips
- Do not try to be a hero and drive the whole distance in one shot unless you are very experienced with long hauls and have multiple drivers.
- Plan your night halt in advance. Bigger cities or well-known towns on the way are better for safe hotels and parking.
- Keep FASTag charged and carry some cash for tolls and food.
- Check your car condition before leaving: tyres, brakes, lights, coolant and AC. A long trip exposes any weak points quickly.
- In monsoon, watch out for heavy rain, waterlogging and slower traffic in the ghats near Goa.
- Once you reach Goa, park the car and slow down. Use the car for exploring, but also just enjoy walking, beaches and cafes.
