About Ahmedabad to Somnath
Ahmedabad to Somnath is one of those classic Gujarat yatra routes. People usually go for darshan at the Somnath Jyotirling, but the drive itself is also quite nice if you plan it well.
By car, you’re not stuck to train or bus timings. You can leave early from Ahmedabad, stop for breakfast or chai on the way, and roll into Somnath by evening, still fresh enough to catch an aarti or a quiet walk near the temple.
If you are using a self drive car from Ahmedabad, this is a straightforward trip as long as you are okay with a 7 to 8 hour drive and a couple of proper breaks.
Route & Distance
Most people use one of these broad routes:
- Ahmedabad – Limbdi – Rajkot – Junagadh – Somnath
- Or via Bhavnagar and the coastal side, which is a bit more scenic but can take longer
Road conditions are usually decent, with the usual mix of smooth highway stretches and slower traffic near towns and junctions.
- Distance from Ahmedabad: Around 400 to 420 km by road, depending on the route you pick
- Travel Time: Typically 7 to 9 hours with normal traffic and 2 or 3 short breaks
If you can start around 5 to 6 AM from Ahmedabad, you’ll avoid most city traffic and reach Somnath well before night.
Places to Visit in Somnath
Once you reach, the main focus is obviously darshan, but there is more to see around Somnath:
- Somnath Jyotirling Temple
The heart of the trip. The temple complex is right next to the sea and the evening aarti feels special.
- Somnath Beach
Not really a swimming beach, but good for a walk, sea breeze and some street snacks.
- Triveni Sangam
The confluence area where three rivers are believed to meet. It has a quiet, old-style vibe.
- Bhalka Tirth
A significant spot in Krishna lore, a short drive from the main temple area.
- Nearby Add-ons
Many people combine Somnath with Gir (Sasan Gir safaris) or Diu if they have an extra day or two.
With 2 or 3 days in hand, you can easily mix darshan, a bit of sightseeing and some relaxed time by the sea.
Travel Tips
- Book your stay near the temple or close enough that you can walk in the evening.
- Start early from Ahmedabad and avoid driving too late into the night on unfamiliar roads.
- Carry snacks and water, especially if you have kids or elders with you.
- Winters and late evenings near the sea can feel cooler than Ahmedabad, so a light sweater helps.
- If you plan to add Gir or Diu, keep at least one extra full day in your schedule.
